Find your perfect stretch of sand on the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is home to some of Australia's most stunning beaches — from the iconic surf breaks of Burleigh Heads to the serene shores of Tallebudgera Creek. Whether you're chasing waves, looking for a family-friendly spot, or simply want to relax with a book, there's a beach for everyone.

Best Time to Visit

The Gold Coast enjoys warm weather year-round. Summer (December–February) is ideal for swimming with water temps around 25°C. Autumn (March–May) offers fewer crowds and perfect conditions. Winter mornings are beautiful for beach walks with mild 20°C days.

Getting Around

Most beaches are easily accessible by the G:link tram which runs from Broadbeach to Helensvale. South-end beaches (Coolangatta, Kirra) are best reached by car or the 700/760 bus routes. Free parking is available at most beaches, though it fills quickly on weekends.

Must-Visit Spots

  1. Burleigh Heads Beach

One of the Gold Coast's most beloved beaches with world-class surf, a stunning headland walk, and vibrant café scene just steps from the sand.

POD tip: Arrive early for parking and grab a coffee from one of the James Street cafés.

  2. Tallebudgera Creek

A calm, crystal-clear tidal creek perfect for families with young children. Sheltered from ocean waves with sandy shores and shady spots.

POD tip: Bring a picnic and a paddleboard — it's the ultimate relaxation spot.

  3. Snapper Rocks & Rainbow Bay

The southern tip of the Gold Coast offers beautiful rock pools, great snorkelling, and consistent surf breaks. Rainbow Bay is sheltered and family-friendly.

POD tip: Walk the Oceanway trail from Snapper Rocks to Coolangatta for stunning coastal views.

  4. Currumbin Beach

A local favourite with reliable waves, golden sand, and fewer crowds than Surfers Paradise. The Currumbin Alley is great for longboarders.

POD tip: Check out Currumbin Rock Pools at low tide for natural swimming pools.

  5. Mermaid Beach

A beautiful stretch of sand popular with locals. Less touristy than Surfers Paradise but just as stunning, with great cafés along Hedges Avenue.

Golden sand, gentle waves, and a laidback vibe make Palm Beach ideal for families and couples. Great dining options along the esplanade.

POD tip: Stay for sunset — Palm Beach has some of the best golden hour views on the coast.

Helpful Tips

What to Pack

Reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 50+), a wide-brim hat, rash vest for extended swims, and reef shoes if you plan to explore rock pools. A beach umbrella or pop-up shade is essential for families with kids.

Water Safety

Always swim between the red and yellow flags. Rip currents are common — if caught, don't fight it; swim parallel to shore. Bluebottle jellyfish can appear November–March; vinegar stations are at most patrolled beaches.

Surf Lessons

If you're new to surfing, Burleigh and Currumbin offer excellent beginner breaks. Local surf schools like Get Wet Surf School and Walkin On Water provide lessons for all ages starting from around $65 per person.

Pro tip

The Gold Coast beaches are patrolled year-round. Always swim between the red and yellow flags, and check surf conditions before heading out.
